Geographic tongue is a map-like appearance of your tongue due to irregular patches on its surface.

혀를 움직이면 여러 가지 형태로 변하지만, 보통 혀의 표면에 주름이 생기는 일은 없습니다. 그런데 혀에 도랑처럼 갈라진 홈이라든가 주름이 항상 보이는 일이 있습니다. 이것을 구상형, 즉 도랑 형태의 혀인 구설 혹은 주름 잡힌 혀라고 합니다.
 
지도상설이란 것은 혀의 벗겨진 모양이 지도 모양으로 불규칙하다는 의미에서 사용되는 말입니다. 심할 때는 벗겨진 부위가 더 많기도 합니다. 벗겨진 곳은 혀의 이곳 저곳을 옮겨 다닙니다. 진짜로 옮겨 다니는 것이 아니고 한 곳이 나으면 다른 곳이 또 벗겨지기도 합니다.
=====원인	=====

어린이에게 많으며 비타민 등의 영양부족, 유전 신경장애 등이 원인이라고 생각되고 있으나 분명한 원인은 아직 불명입니다.

===== 증상	=====

혀 표면의 측면이나 중앙부에 생기는 주위가 백색이나 회백색으로 물들어 있는 부정형의 빨간 반점인데, 그날의 상황에 따라 그 위치가 바꿔지기도 하고, 크기도 달라지며, 한 군데 붙어 있기도 하는 등 마치 지도처럼 보인다고 해서 지도상설이라고 부르는 것입니다. 통증이나 가려움 같은 자각증세는 없는 것이 보통이지만 때로는 따끔따끔하고 음식이 닿으면 아플 때도 있습니다.
 
붉은 반점은 수일에서 수십일 후에는 자연히 사라지지만 장기간에 걸쳐 재발을 되풀이 하는 경우가 많습니다. 맛이나 촉각에는 별로 이상이 없고 또 통증과 같은 자각증세가 없는 것이 보통입니다. 그러나 그 홈이나 주름 속에 음식 찌꺼기 같은 것이 끼어 부식하면 불결하게 되어 염증을 일으켜서 음식을 먹으면 따가움을 느끼게 됩니다.

=====치료	=====

원인이 분명치 않기 때문에 정확한 치료법이 없습니다. 음식을 먹을 때 몹시 따갑다든가 아린 느낌이 들면 양치질을 해서 입안을 깨끗이 하는 등의 대증요법을 써야 합니다. 지도상설은 세월이 약 입니다. 특별한 치료가 없고 그냥 두면 좋아집니다. 이렇게 헐은 혀를 아파하는 경우가 간혹 있습니다.

Causes

The specific cause of geographic tongue is unknown, although vitamin B deficiency may be involved. Other causes may include irritation from hot or spicy foods, or alcohol. The condition appears to be less common in smokers.

The pattern on the surface of the tongue may change very rapidly. This pattern change occurs when there is a loss of the tiny, finger-like projections, called papillae, on the tongue's surface. This makes areas of the tongue flat. These areas are said to be "denuded." Denuded areas may persist for more than a month.

Symptoms

Map-like appearance to the surface of the tongue
Patches that change location from day to day
Smooth, beefy red patches and lesions on the tongue
Soreness and burning pain (in some cases)
Exams and Tests

Your doctor will usually diagnose this condition based on an examination of your tongue. Tests are usually not necessary.

Treatment

There is no treatment.

Outlook (Prognosis)

Geographic tongue is a harmless condition, but it can be persistent and uncomfortable.

When to Contact a Medical Professional

Call your doctor if the symptoms last longer than 10 days. Seek immediate medical help if:

Breathing trouble occurs
The tongue is severely swollen
There are problems with speaking, chewing, or swallowing
Prevention

Avoid irritating your tongue with hot or spicy food or alcohol if you are prone to this condition.
