임신 2기에 코뼈의 길이가 짧은 태아는 다운증후군의 위험이 높으며, 또한 코뼈의 형성저하(hypoplasia)는 21번 삼염색체성(trisomy 21)을 예측하는 지표"라는 연구결과가 발표되었다.

다운증후군의 60-70%에서 보이지 않고 에드워드증후군의 반수에서, 파타우증후군의 30%에서 태아의 코뼈가 보이지 않는 것으로 알려져 있다.

정상 염색체 태아에서 코뼈가 없는 경우는 1~2%에 불과한 반면, 다운 증후군 태아의 60~70%에서 코뼈가 관찰되지 않는다. 임신 11+0주에서 13+6주 사이 초음파 검사에서 코뼈가 관찰되지 않는 경우 1.4% 위양성률에서 다운 증후군의 발견율은 69%로 보고되고 있다. 임신 제1삼분기복합선별검사에 코뼈의 유무를 포함시키면 위양성률 2.5%에서 다운 증후군을 약 90%까지 발견할 수 있는 것으로 알려져 있다.
