Following instructions from Keith and master fixer-al in an ancient post on this board, I deleted the following folders from C:\Program Files: - Internet Explorer - Windows Media Player And the following file(s) from C:\Windows\System: - wmploc.dll - wmploc.*

It fixed the problem. WinME was able to reinstall. Apparently, the cause is that WinME cannot reinstall itself if you have a version of Internet Explorer greater than 5.5, and/or Windows Media Player greater than version 7. Nice going Microsoft…
