 +뇌하수체는 뇌의 하부에 위치한 완두콩 크기의 구조물이다.
 +
 +뇌하수체는 전엽(anterior), 중엽(intermediate), 후엽(posterior)의 세 엽(lobes)으로 구성 되어있다.
 +
 + 비록 뇌하수체의 크기는 작지만 화학적 조절에 중요한 역할을 한다. 여기서 나온 내분비는 다른 내분비선을 조절하기 때문에 이 선을 주선(mastergland)이라 부른다.
